FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a robotics competition program designed for middle school students. It challenges students to design, build, and program robots using a reusable metal kit and Android technology to compete in exciting, team-based competitions.
Each FTC season begins in September with the release of a brand-new game. Teams receive a manual with rules, tasks, and scoring guidelines — then the building begins!
1. Build & Program a Robot
Teams use a reusable robotics kit to design and code a custom robot that completes tasks autonomously and with driver control.
2. Develop Strategy and Team Roles
Students plan how to approach the game: which tasks to focus on and how to design their robot.
3. Practice and Refine
Teams test, refine, and practice with their robot while documenting their process and preparing presentations for judges.
4. Compete at Events
Teams compete at local qualifiers, where they present their work and compete in alliance-based matches. Top teams may advance to the state championship.
Students from across the Gull Lake School Community are invited to participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) through our program. Eligible students include those enrolled in:
No prior experience with robotics is required — just a passion for learning, problem-solving, and teamwork!
Application Window:
Applications to join the FTC opens in late May and closes in early June each year.
Season Schedule:
The FTC season runs from September through December, with 2-3 weekly team meetings, hands-on robotics work, and participation in local competitions.
